Sailpast 2019

We were blessed with a beautiful sunny day on June 8th. Such a joy after so many weeks of wet cool weather and the extra work and worry caused by rising Lake Ontario water levels.

The Organizing Committee (Brad and Crystal Chapman, Bob Hallworth, Leigh and Marguerite Campbell & Jan and Paavo Kivisto) had pulled together a detailed plan of tasks that needed doing and the program for the evening. It was the North Side Team’s turn to assist the Committee and the many volunteers worked diligently to prepare our Club for this special day on our year’s Calendar of Events. The ground were in excellent shape, the tent was beautifully decorated including a first ever “main” stage.

The day officially kicked off with a briefing of the skippers by Brad (Vice Commodore) and the Blessing of the Fleet (Alan Hallworth). Shortly afterward the PYC fleet headed out of the harbour for the on-water portion of Sailpast. Unlike recent years, there were light winds for sailpast resulting in some of the fleet doing a complex zig zag route toward the Commodore’s vessel. It truly showcased the high skill levels of the Club’s skippers as they maneuvered to stay in proper sequence and yet avoid any bumping and grinding of hulls.

The evening program was highlighted by entertainment by two local students. JJ walked from table to table doing some magic tricks and then performed a few more astonishing illusions on the main stage. Alex provided live music (acoustic guitar and voice) during the dinner and on the main stage portion of the program. We were honoured to host his Honour, Mayor Brian Ostrander and his wife Tammy during the afternoon and evening’s activities.

There was a silent auction to raise funds for the future firepit-seating area project as well as a 50/50 draw to help offset some of the expense of running Sailpast.

The BBQ’s were hot and members gathered around to grill/char their favourite food. The caterers had prepared delicious salads, baked potatoes and rolls.

The evening concluded with the awarding of prizes for the best decorated boat (Serenity) and the best dressed crew (Happy Girl). As well, the winners of the 50/50 draw and silent auction were announced.

There a rumours that the partying carried on into the wee hours of the morning.

It was a wonderful day and memorable Sailpast. Pictures from this outstanding event can be found here: https://presquileyc.com/sail-past-2019-pictures
