50 years messing about in boats
The 50th Committee has been working for the last many months at putting together a plan to celebrate the club’s 50th Anniversary.
It is our intention that we celebrate the club’s 50th throughout the season so you will notice that various events will include a reference to each event being the 50th. The primary celebration will be at the usual club anniversary spot in the schedule, on July 16th.
We have a number of activities planned for that day, starting with a bay race and then around mid afternoon we will start the party, with games, presentations, short speeches, prizes, silent auction, musical entertainment, fireworks and a bonfire. There will be a 1966 theme to the event so members will be encouraged to wear 60’s garb to the evening celebrations or come wearing some sort of PYC clothing. We are also encouraging members to sleep over in their boats that night and be on hand for a pancake breakfast the next morning. We are also hoping that there will be a good showing of past members and will be sending out special invitations to a number of retired members. We intend to have a silent auction that evening and are asking for member’s donations to that as well as for prizes for some of the contests. We have booked the tent which we use for Sailpast so there will be lots of room and protection from the elements for all of our activities.
The committee was encouraged by the executive to come up with a project which would be a lasting tribute to the founders and builders of the club over the years. We considered a number of options, many of them quite practical but thought the one project which is in the 5 year plan which in the normal course of events will not be finished for many years, is that of the Founder’s Gazebo to be built on the south side looking out on to the bay. We thought this project a fitting tribute to those who had made the club what it is today so you will see that part of our focus will be to start fund raising for it. Almost all fund raising associated with the 50th will be channelled towards the Founder’s Gazebo Later on, members will be approached on an individual basis for donations towards the project. The timeframe for completion will depend on how successful those efforts are but regardless, it is our intention this year to at least begin the fund raising for it. The executive has authorized the committee to hold 50/50 draws throughout the season so please bring your toonies to the first work party and for that matter every other gathering this year as there will invariably be committee members soliciting contributions.
As part of the year’s celebration, we are encouraging members to proudly wear club regalia. We will be offering special 50th clothing and will also have a 50th pennant for sale which we are hoping members will buy and fly below their burgee. We will have sizing shirts available by the GM later this month so that members can pre-order golf style shirts or other clothing with the 50th logo on them and/or can order this year’s T shirts. On this note, we will be re instituting the T shirt design competition, with the winning design being placed on this year’s T shirt.
We will be communicating many more times throughout the season with you especially as we lead up to the July 16/17 event and are looking forward to celebrating with you “50 years messing about in boats”
