Sadly we’ve come to the end of another series of 10 Wednesday evening fun races. The rabbit starts and self-timing posed some challenges, but these are only fun races (no prestigious silverware or reputation to win) and everyone (or at least most) had a laugh about the “boo-boos” afterwards.
Fortunately we had great weather for every race over the season, however some evenings we were left looking for the odd puff of wind. The season started off with small fleets, but these increased through the series to 9 for the last race. These races provide a great opportunity for inexperienced persons to come along and try racing their boats (no need for a PHRF racing certificate) or for persons without boats to come along and try crewing. There’s always a place available.
The series is as much a social event as a racing event. And a big factor in the success of the series was undoubtedly the post-race burgers organized by Rob Arbuckle, with proceeds going to a club project (the fire pit project this year). On the final 2 evenings, the burgers were complimented by delicious pies (prepared and cooked by Bradley Lowther – a new social member). Thank you Rob, Bradley and all who helped prepare and cook the Burgers.
The good news is that our fun races are not over for 2019. Because it gets dark too early in the evenings, on August 28th we start a series of 4 weekly races on Wednesday afternoons. This series is called the Rotten Apple series, which gives you a hint of the special trophy up for grabs. The skippers meeting is at 12:15 PM, so please do come along – everyone is welcome.
